Contributed by Stacey Ricketts 16 Aug 2006 -- News Article from Long Neck News Dated 9/7/1983

In Memoriam - Oscar Whittington Wright
Editor's note: The Nanticoke people mourn the death of Oscar Whittington Wright, 94, who passed away Aug 16.

Known to the community as "Uncle Os", Mr. Wright was an inventor and prolific creator of utensils and jewelry made from natural materials. He was a strong link to the Nanticoke Past and his memory will be honored at the powwow this weekend.

Following is the text of an obituary, written by Mr. Wright's grand-daughter Kathleen Dickerson, and was read at his funeral service.

"Oscar Whittington Wright was born May 31, 1889 and quietly departed this life August 16, 1983 at the age of 94 years, 2 months and 15 days. Oscar was the son of David and Emily Wright and the youngest of 13 children.

"Uncle Oscar as he was generally know, was born near Indian River and early in his youth, learned to make nets and traps and made use of the materials provided by the land and water. In a matter of minutes, he could whittle a corn peg. He enjoyed making vessels out of gourds, necklaces out of seeds and pods and invented a crab trap.

"In 1909 Oscar married Fannie Harmon and had two sons Richard and Warren. In a few years Fannie died of illness. On June 8, 1924, he married Winona Jameson, a teacher from Wrightsville, Pa. Frequently he worked in Wilmington and at a resort in Eagles Mere, Pa while his wife continued teaching in Millsboro.

He returned to Millsboro and worked at Townsend's Hatchery where he retired after many years of service.

"Uncle Oscar was a quiet man, soft spoken and had a keen mind for remembering dates and events that happened years ago. He was devoted to the Indian Cause along with his brothers, Warren, Elwood, and Walter. He participated in the pow-wows during the 1920's and was a life long friend of Dr. Speck and C. A. Weslager, both anthropologist studying the Nanticoke people.

"Uncle Oscar patiently cared for his wife, Winona during her lone illness and became very lonely after her death. He was drawn very close to sister Ida. Gradually he became very ill and hospitalized several times. he was lovingly cared for by his granddaughter, Kathleen. He will be missed.

There remains of his family one sister, Ida Sammons of Lewes, Delaware, two grandchildren, Kathleen Dickerson of Greenwood, Del, and Anthony Wright of Phila, Pa, 10 great-grand children, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
