James Samuel Greenage
June 30, 1931 - November 29, 2009

James “Bubbie” Samuel Greenage was peacefully called home to the Lord, Sunday November 29, 2009 surrounded by his wife and children in the house he built for his wife 52 years ago. He was 78. He was born June 30, 1931 near Kenton, Delaware to the late James L. Greenage and Helen Sammons Greenage.

Mr. Greenage served in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Munich, Germany, then served in the United States Reserves and the Delaware National Guard until 1968. He was proud of his military background willingly telling anyone who would listen about his years of service. He began working as a very young boy on neighboring relatives' farms bailing hay or attending to livestock; worked in a cannery and as a gas station attendant. Mr. Greenage also worked for the City Cab in Dover and was known as one the friendliest cab drivers in town. He worked for Sears for 16 years, left there to work for General Foods retiring after 26 years in 1994. Often he would work two jobs or volunteer for many hours of overtime to ensure his wife would be able to stay home to take care of his children – w hich was very important to him.

Mr. Greenage loved to garden and was very proud of the many various vegetables he would grow. He was also very generous with his harvests, freely giving to relatives, friends and strangers – although after a few minutes with “Bubbie”, (as relatives and his long time friends called him) no one was a stranger for very long. He was kind, gentle, soft spoken and often generous to a fault, but “Pop-Pop" would always have a kind word or a dollar or two to give to someone, regardless of their situation; that was just his way. A deeply spiritual man, he raised his family to be chariable, compassionate and righteous, and was entirely devoted to his family, always impressing the importance of love, cooperation and consideration to overcome adversity. Th ough humble, he wanted nothing more than what anyone should want: a loving cared for family. He was not a jealous man, he did not want for money, he only wanted to see his family happy.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Susan and a sister Frieda Greenage Reed. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Paxton Greenage; two daughters, Cynthia Novak and her husband Gregory of Houston, Judith Ridgeway and her husband Robert L. of Dover; his son, James C. Greenage and his wife Kathlee n of Hartly; his brother, Paul J. Greenage and his wife Norma of Dover; five sisters, Frances Pritchett and her husband Dawes of Dover, Regina Tchakeria n and her husband Khajag of Phila., PA, Myrtle Mosley of Bridgeton, NJ, Katherine Clark and her husband Kenneth, Sr. of Millsboro and Lorraine Coker and her husband C. Edward of Dover; nine grandchildren: Jimi and Katie Ale, Charlie Ritchie, James and Lisa Greenage, Robert Ridgeway, Kelly, Jackie and Stepha nie Munce; nine great grandchildren: Liam, Jareth, Jadis, Reese, Ben, Payton, Paxton, Hector and Jasmyn and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and internment will be held 10am Friday December 4, 2009 at Delaware Veterans Memorial P ark, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE. Friends may call from 6-8pm Thursday evening at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover.

Jennie Greenage 1904-1967
(Contributed by Lishia Durham Heard)

Funeral program: Born November 24, 1904 Died March 30, 1967. Obsequies for Jennie Greenage, Tuesday, April 4th, 1967, Frank Givens Funeral Home (Chapel Service), 12809 Twelfth Street, Detroit, Mich., Reverend Otis Saunders, Rev. James E. Rippy Officiating.

Mrs. Jennie Greenage was born on Thanksgiving day, November 24, 1904. She and her brother, James, were the only children born to Mr. And Mrs. Knox. James preceded her in death after a short illness during the late 1950's.

Mrs. Greenage was born in Hopkinsville, Ky. She lived there as a youngster and later married Mr. George Howard Hite, who had lived in nearby Danville, Ky. The couple moved to Detroit, Michigan, where their children George Jr. and Donald were born. They moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and lived for a short time. It was there that, due to an unfortunate accident, she lost her son, Donald, at the age of 1 years. The family, not being able to bear the surroundings after the incident, moved to Detroit, Michigan.

After a loving and enjoyable marriage, her husband was stricken with illness and passed away in the early 1930's. She later met and married Mr. Raymond Greenage, with whom she remained for 31 years until death separated them on Tuesday, March 30, 1967, at Harper Hospital.

Mrs. Greenage's love for her husband Raymond and son George was well known. Mrs. Greenage was a devoted, loving mother and wife, and throughout her lifetime was always jolly and enjoyed making people laugh.

Although she was not a member of any established church, her religious beliefs were very strong to her, and her turst was alsways in Almighty God. She often read the Bible and prayer was always her comfort, even to through her last moments. During her brief illness she was brave, humorous, courageous and fought hard to recover. She was in the hospital for only 30 days, but during this short period she kept her fellow patients in stitches and all the employees loved her. Everyone became quite concerned when her condition grew worse and she was silenced because of loss of speech during the last several days. Even then she would wink her eyes to you, raise her hand to wave, or attempt a smile. To have known Mrs. Greenage was indeed a pleasure. She delighted in conversation and making people laugh. Humor seemed to run in the family. Her loved ones kept a constant vigil at her bedside, and it was said that she suffered very little or no pain during her illness and passed away quietly without any prolonged suffering. It was agreed that she indeed was blessed.

Mrs. Greenage, at the age of 62, passed away as she lived--quietly. Needless to say, she certainly will be missed dearly and mourned by many--always.

She leaves to mourn her passing: a loving husband and son, six grandchildren, five sisters-in-law, three nieces, one nephew and his family, one cousin and her family, plus a host of other relatives and friends. Pallbearers: Edward G Wilkerson, Jr. Richard Jones, Patrick O'connor, Clifford Marshall, Bill Evelyn, Bill Malone, Mack Oliver, Furman D Busby.
