Thomas Montson, aged 43 years
resident of Denton, Wayne Co., Michiganthat while in service and in the line of his duty, he became disabled at the time and place, and in the manner following, to wit: On or about the 19th day of September, 1864 at Winchester, Va., he received a gunshot wound from the enemy in the front part of the chin, coming out through the throat near the windpipe, injuring the bone; that said wound makes his throat sore and painful all the time, and gives him a constant headache and renders him unable to masticate any hard food whatever, and unable to labor one half of the time; that he was treated in hospital at Wilmington, Del., and at Beverly, New Jersey.

Thomas Montson was enrolled on the 11th day of Jan'y, 1864, at Camden [New Jersey] in Co. "C", 3d Regiment of N.J. Cav. Volunteers, to serve three years or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on the 22" day of Jan'y 1864, at Trenton [New Jersey], in Co. "C", 3d Regiment of N.J. Cav. Volunteers, to serve three years, or during the war. On the Muster Roll of Co. "C" of that Regiment, for the months of Sept'r and Oct'r 1864, he is reported "Absent wounded at Hosp." and so borne until May & June 1865, when reported "Present." M/O [muster out] roll [of] co[mpany] dated Aug 1" 1865, reports him "Mustered out with co." Co. was in action at Winchester Va. Sept'r 19" 1864.

Thomas Munson ... was admitted to Tilton Gen. Hospital, Wilmington, Del., Oct. 14" 1864, from Field Hosp., Martinsburg, Va., for treatment for G.S. [gun shot] Flesh Wound of Chin (slight), rec'd Oct 11" 64 at Woodstock, Va., and was transf'd Oct. 31" 64. Ent'd Gen. Hosp. Beverly N.J. Nov. 1" 64 (as Thomas Munsen) as Convalescent, furl'd Nov. 3" 64, ret'd Nov. 12" 64, and ret'd to duty Dec 23" 64.
There are no records of Field Hosp. at Martinsburg, Va., on file, nor are there any of the Regt.

The Ball glanced backwards & escaped near upper portion of larynx. The wound interferes very naturally with Breathing and swallowing and is increasing in severity.

That all the persons who were present at her marriage are dead. That on June 20th 1892 she went down to Dover Delaware and had the County Clerk look over the records and he could find no record of her marriage. That she request the enclosed letters be received as evidence in the matter. That the said letters were received in answer to inquiries made at her request.

I remember the fact that I helped to cook and serve the supper, and remember, the supper was prepared on account of the wedding. I cannot remember the day or month or year, but I do remember their wedding, and I know neither of them were ever married previous to their marriage to each other. They visited me in Delaware frequently in the years between their marriage and his death, and I have frequently visited them. I know they were not previously married.
