From Kyle Harmon
<kharmon@friendsbalt.org>, Sep 12, 2014:
Attached is copy
of my families lineage each page has a different branch that directly
leads back to me and my children.
On the Harmon/Harman
side, look at William Harman born in 1635 in Northampton County, VA: This
correlates with the theory that some of the Indian River Indians from
Sussex County may have come from Assateague or other tribes from the southern
tip on the peninsula. There is a steady migration north over the generations
of Harmon/Harmans until Edward
Harmon (Rev. War Vet) purchased land in Indian River
Hundred. Then the family established large amounts of acreage and this
land has been passed down generation to generation. There is still land
that is family owned in the same vicinity for hundreds of years.
On the Morris side
I was able to find a document on the website that correlated with some
family history and was able to track it to as far as I have. I still am
on the lookout for additional information. It was believed at some point
that an English sailor came over here and married and had children with a
full blood native woman. Trying to track down the Morris registrar in
the British army from back then. I should know within the next month.
I will continue
to do research on my people. If I come across additional pertinent information
I will share it.
----
With regard to
Paul Heinegg's
report on the Harmon family: They did not classify people properly
back in those days. There is documented evidence of human error whether
accidental or purposely all throughout history in Virginia, Maryland,
and Delaware. I am not denying nor confirming that there is Native American
blood also mixed in with African American blood through the generations.
I do know that from oral history and family traditions the Harmon side
of my family comes from native stock dating back to the contact period.
The upward migration starting from Northampton county, and moving north
throughout the years correlates with the theory that present day Nanticoke
Indians that live in Indian River Hundred have Assateague Indians tribal
roots. Assateague along with other smaller tribes of the eastern shore
that were classified as Nanticoke or assimilated with them.
Heinegg's research
also shows that the Harman's were labeled mulattoes or light skinned black.
All throughout our family photo albums I have seen the same general distinctions
generation after generation. They match the characteristics that my ancestors
had back in the 1600-1800s era. My claims are not based on scientific
evidence, but rather an educated guess. My family has a tradition of passing
down names generation to generation and some of the names of my ancestors
coincide with the names of later generations. This is a practice used
by the Nanticoke.
I
am not discrediting Heinegg's research. I am just simply saying that whoever
classified race back in the old days did a very poor job in terms of accuracy.
The one drop rule and other methods used to classify race lack substance
and common sense. There are not any pure breed blood lines any more for
any race. Another family trait that has passed down generation after generation
in the Harmon family is the desire to purchase acreage and provide for
your family. We have a history of aggressively accumulating land to the
point where in the Indian River hundred community The Harmon family owned
most of the communities property. This is documented in land records,
deeds, and wills for the state of Delaware. I hope this information helps.
