Notes for MARY ANN CARLL: According to family oral history, Mary Carll arrived in the United States along with her mother, name unknown, in 1849. They were residents of Baden Germany and may have been of Prussian origin. Both Mary's father and at least one brother fought for the aristocracy and had been killed during the German Revolution of 1848. Fearing for their lives, Mary and her mother hurridly fled Baden with just a few items of clothing and a few family jewels that had been sewn into the hems of their dresses. It is unknown at this time which port of departure or arrival they used. History continues that Mary's mother strongly disapproved of the marriage of Mary to Holmes Pearce because he was a mulatto and as a result she disowned Mary and had no further contact with her. It is thought that Mary's mother is burried in Broadstreet Cemetery, Bridgeton, NJ, but not knowing if she ever remarried, her grave has yet to be located.  During taking of 1910 US Census, Mary (Carll) Pierce was living in the household of her youngest son, George T. Pierce and family. Mary, at this time was listed as being widowed. It is also listed that Mary had a total of 10 children, but by 1910, only 5 were still living. Mary died the following year at the age of 79.  More About MARY ANN CARLL: Burial: 1911, Gouldtown Cemetery, Gouldtown, New Jersey Immigration: 1849128  New Jersey Marriages, 1684-1895 Record about MARY CARLL Name: HOLMES PEARCE Spouse: MARY CARLL Marriage Date: 20 Feb 1850 County: Cumberland State: NJ

59. Andrew PIERCE

Notes for ANDREW PIERCE: Father, Benjamin Pierce living in household in 1850  During the time their children were born, Andrew Jackson, a staunch Indian fighter before becoming President was in office (1829-1834). Many people of Indian descent allowed themselved to be classified as Mulatto, Black, White, or Negro for fear of reprisals by the Government. Many Indian families during this same time were being gathered up by US forces and forcibly marched to areas of Government containment or Reservations--the Trails of Tears and Trails of Death occurred during President Jackson's term.  More About ANDREW PIERCE: Burial: Gouldtown Cemetery Cause of Death: Softening of the brain75 Medical Information: Medical attendant: A.
