3. Elizabeth Wyatt ( ) was born about 1789 in Maryland. She died on 15 Jul 1864 probably in Caroline County, Maryland. ELIZABETH'S FAMILY IS PROVED VIA FAMILY BIBLE.

By family tradition, Elizabeth is part or full Indian. Her husband or companion, William Carty, was of European descent

see http://www.lynncjackson.com/family/carty-w.htm by Lynn Jackson which is quoted here
(minor edits):

"Based on the Maryland census records, William Carty was born in Maryland (probably Caroline county, which was created in 1774) sometime around 1792. He was white and the son of James McCarty and Barsheba Dean McCarty. He and his parents (continued to live in Caroline County) until his death.

"Elizabeth and William appeared in the 1820 Caroline Co., MD census. William was listed as white , his wife and 3 children were listed as "M". William's daughter, Henrietta Carty MORGAN, told her son Napoleon Morgan that her mother was a full blood Maryland Indian although she did not know the tribe. It is interesting to note that, in later censuses, William's race was changed to "M" to reflect that of his wife and children. His brothers and their families continued to be listed as "white". This is just one of many indications that race in the 18th & 19th century on the Delmarva peninsula was more about the perceptions of the record keepers than about accurately reflecting the true racial make-up of the community.

"It is difficult to pin down Elizabeth's tribal background. Small pockets of remnant Choptanks, Lenapes and others remained in Maryland (just as they did in Delaware) after the big northbound migrations in the early 1700's. As late as the mid 18th century, Nanticokes in NY were asking permission to return to the Delmarva peninsula to visit family members they had left behind. The Maryland records, however, note their presence only briefly.

'What is clear is that the Carty family became a mixed race family around 1813 when William Carty married Elizabeth. What is also clear is that, when looking for mates, many of their children looked across the border into Kent Co., DE to the mixed race community centered around Cheswold."

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS, April 2016:

Gail Peterson asks:
"Were William Carty and Elizabeth Wyatt legally married or living together under common law? I ask because in the 1850 federal census at the age of 60, she is listed as living with William, but is using her maiden name. This is a most difficult line to trace...."

John Carter replies:
"Gail, that has long been a mystery, but I lean toward it being a common-law relationship for the very reason you state--Elizabeth Wyatt's surname in the 1850 census. But you're right--this particular family has always been confusing. In the 1820 census William Carty is listed as white while his wife & children are listed as mulatto. But later the whole family was listed as mulatto, including William. Also, in 1840 Elizabeth Wyatt is listed as a head-of-household, so it's unclear why William wasn't listed as the head that year. Probably further evidence of their common-law status. Side note: their daughter Henrietta Carty/Carter Morgan (according to her son Napoleon) stated that her mother Elizabeth Wyatt was a "full-blood Maryland Indian," although Napoleon could not name her tribe. (p. 139 of "Delaware's Forgotten Folk" by C.A. Weslager, publ. 1943)."
