SURNAME: Explanation for name-change given in an affidavit signed by Allen in Sep of 1905:

"He served in Co. F. 19th Reg't. U.S.C.T. under the name of Allen Murray. When he enlisted he went under his father's name, his father's name being Thomas Murray, his mother being Rosetta Murray by marriage.  The reason why he took the name of Reed was because that was his father's father's name was Reed, his father being a base born child took the name of his mother which was Reed.  He, the affiant, therefore, when he returned from the War took the name of his father because he was going by that name, Thomas Reed, instead of Thomas Murray."

In the mid-1800's the family lived in Potter's Landing (now called Williston), Caroline County. It is one of the most historic settlements of Caroline County. The early history of this place dates from about 1750 and is connected with the Potter family—the first known settlers. During the Revolutionary War this place served as a depot for collecting supplies for the soldiers and at the same time, likely served as a drilling place for the militia. At some time in the latter part of the 1800's the family moved to the mixed-blood community of Cheswold, Kent County, Delaware.
