The last pages of the Bible were cut with places for "Family Portraits", all of which were empty- but the first bore the incription "Our grandmother Rebecca Ridgeway" above - probably the handwriting of Agnes L. Carter Newlin.

Placed inside the back cover of the Bible was the actual original marriage certificate of Hopewell U. Carter Sr. & Sarah Catherine Ridgeway, which reads as follow:

* Certificate of Marriage:

This is to certify that I have this day joined in Marriage Hopewell Carter of Kent County State of Delaware and Sallie Ridgeway of Kent County State of Delaware according to the laws of the state of Delaware and that were present as witnesses: Lizzie Carter of Cheswold Del and John N. Carter of Cheswold Del. Dated December 25th 1888. W. S. Robinson, Minister

Addendum

Also found within the bible were the following items:

* A receipt from the Peoples Furnishing Company, dated Nov. 3rd 1891 in Cheswold Del for the purchase of one Bible valued at $12.00 to be paid in payments of $1.00 per month until paid off (salesman: W. T/J? Canesey). (Handwriting very probably the same as on the "presented to" page which may explain the mis-spelled name)

* A purchase order from R. G. Chase & Co., Geneva, NY, dated May (9?) 1893 in Cheswold, Del for the purchase of 2 "shrubs, vines, plants etc." for $2.50

* A newspaper clipping of a poem regarding Burton Mosely, precluded by: "sacred to the memory of Burton Mosley, who departed this life one year ago, October 13, 1918, an affectionate father, faithful friend and sincere Christian."- and concluded by: "Mary J. Mosely, wife, mother-in-law (Sarah Catherine Rdigeway Carter) and daughters Pauline B. and Ivanetta Mosely, Raymond's Neck.

* A receipt (2 receipts?) from the Chicago Crayon Company, 1123-1155 W. Twentieth St., Chicago, dated July 15, 1908 to Mrs. James Seeney for the purchase of one un-framed 16" x 20" crayon portrait for $1.98
