Notes about the Cott Bible by John C. Carter:

The Cott Family Bible, including scans of the opening & family record pages, transcriptions of the family record pages, photos of the Bible itself, and scans of various items contained within the Bible, including obituaries.

Note: the obituary of Florence L. Cott Baker (at the bottom of this page) was not in the Bible itself, but rather with some of the other materials that were sent to me by a family friend after Florence's death. Florence was the last person in her line of the family, so of course she wouldn't have been able to place her own obituary in the Bible.

Based on the handwritten transcription of Florence's father's obituary (probably written by Florence herself), with the notation of "C. C. Gazette" at the top, I would presume that all of the obituaries are from the Carson City Gazette since it would have been the primary (and likely only) newspaper in the area.

In another 9 years the Bible will be 200 years old--amazing! (Although judging by the inscription in the front, it would appear to have been acquired by John A. Cott in 1839 ... unless the 1839 refers to the date John A. Cott arrived in Delaware, since the 1856 seems to refer to the date his grandson John W. Cott arrived in Michigan).

Another note: There's a long-known discrepancy in the data contained on the 3rd page of the Bible's family record. For some reason it lists the birth of a Sarah (Carney) Cott, daughter of Thomas & Sarah Carney, and then lists the marriage of this Sarah to John Wesley Cott. However, John Wesley Cott married Lydia A. Dean in 1859 (prior to the listed marriage of John W. & Sarah in 1862) and remained married to Lydia until his death. We've never been able to figure this error out. (John W's father John D. Cott married a Sarah, but she was Sarah Ann "Annie" Dean [daughter of Jesse Sr & Rebecca Dean], and they were presumably married ca. 1827).
