Apprentice Indentures

Warren & Maria (Sockume) Wright's children

to Levin Sockume, 1843

Sussex County, Delaware

An apprentice indenture was an actual manuscript contract by which a person or persons, generally a minor, was bound to serve another in his trade, art, or occupation for a stated time, for the purpose of being instructed in the same.

I found apprentice indentures for Walter Wright, Mary Wright and Eunice Wright the children of Warren Wright. All three children were indentured to Levin Sockum, who may have been the brother of their mother, Maria Sockum Wright.

Eunice Wright was bound to Levin Sockum on the 23 Mar 1843; her age was 9 years 9 months and 27 days, which would make her birthday 24 May 1833. She was to be taught the art, trade or mystery of housewifery. (Eunice later married Captain Ephraim Charles Harmon)

Mary Wright was bound to Levin Sockum on the 23 Mar 1843; her age was 8 years 1 months and 15 days, which would make her birthday 08 Feb 1835. She was to be taught the art, trade or mystery of housewifery.

Walter Wright was bound to Levin Sockum on the 23 Mar 1843; his age was 6 years 6 months and 24 days, which would make his birthday 27 Aug 1836. He was to be taught the art, trade or mystery of farming.

I also noticed that Warren Wright was able to sign his name on the apprentice indentures and Levin Sockum signed his mark.
